Overdose Aid Kits containing Narcan will be installed in every county in New Jersey as part of nationwide effort focused on harm reduction

MILWAUKEE — According to the CDC, 2.1 million people were diagnosed with opioid use disorder, and 100,000 died from a drug-related overdose in 2021. Serve You Rx, a national pharmacy benefit solutions provider, is committed to curtailing this trend, saving lives, and advocating for individuals and families impacted by substance use disorder. To ensure harm reduction resources are accessible at the most critical moments, Serve You Rx is donating twenty-one Overdose Aid Kit (OAKs) to the National Center for Advocacy and Recovery (NCAAR) in Robbinsville, NJ, on September 18, 2022. One OAK will be installed at the NCAAR headquarters, and the rest will be distributed throughout the state so that each county has one kit available to its residents.

Overdose Aid Kits, or OAKs, are boxes that include the lifesaving drug Narcan, information on how to administer it in an emergency, and other information and resources for those impacted by the opioid epidemic. Narcan is the brand-name nasal spray formulation of the drug naloxone, which is a medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It is safe for everyone to use, has no potential for abuse, and has minimal to no side effects.

“Our late President and CEO, Sharon Murillo, was passionate about supporting those in recovery,” said Serve You Rx Outreach Program Manager, Jessica Geschke. “She wanted OAKs to be as prevalent in our society as defibrillators.”

OAK installations are occurring throughout the country in conjunction with the nationwide Mobilize Recovery bus tour, of which Serve You Rx is also a sponsor. The route will include visits to 27 cities and over 40 events. Serve You Rx is donating 100 OAKs to locations along the tour and will assist with many of the kit installations. The stop in Atlanta will include:

  • Representatives from Recovery Cares Community Bus Presser and Meeting, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., National Center for Advocacy and Recovery (NCAAR), 360 Corporate Blvd, Robbinsville, NJ 08691 Serve You Rx will be installing one OAK at the NCAAR. The remaining twenty OAK boxes will be donated to Tonia Ahern, Advocacy Coordinator for the NCAAR, who will work with county officials to disburse the boxes to each Recovery Community Center in the state of New Jersey.

“As a national pharmacy benefit solutions provider with a role in the pharmaceutical supply chain, Serve You Rx is committed to taking action against the opioid epidemic,” stated Serve You Rx CEO Justin Jasniewski. “We want to make Narcan available on a no-questions-asked basis, which allows anyone to take it and use it in an emergency or save it in their first-aid kit without worrying about the stigma of substance-use disorder. We firmly believe this approach saves lives.”
